Netflix Naughty
The work of being an escort in Cardiff or any South Wales escorts is about earning money to drive life forward positively.
The colleagues who work as outcall girls at Aphrodite Agency are varied and many – some are trying to make it through university and others are working to buy a house. Out outcall girls are all working within boundaries defined by respect and the needs of the customer. It is not what the newspapers would like to portray – or it seems a documentary on Netflix.
I had been told to watch a programme called 'Escorts" on Netflix, I was quite shocked if I do say so myself.
Escorts, a programme focused on Cookie Jane and Emily, does nothing other than promote the stereotype and continue judgemental behaviour. It is shameful really – as it turned these women into victims – not of being call girls but of being subjects of a TV programme.
The two girls were chosen for the surprise factor it would seem. These two women are privately school educated and shared a flat in Mayfair. They had the silver spoon and the luxury life and still they chose to be a call girl… at least this is the tone of the programme.
There are images of drug taking and there is seemingly a constant background noise of grunts and groans in the flat they share – like some particularly cheap porno film. And this is the problem, the whole documentary is full of titillation and voyeurism. There are angles of women from above, domineering them. There are scenes of them in the shower and in the bath – and of course – sat on their bed in a provocative pose.
What is most degrading about the programme is that the interviews were all filmed with the women barely dressed and some topless! This was even when the women were sharing honest sadness at rifts with their family or an ex-partner. But, the point that they were people was lost in favour of the image of them as sex-objects.
Soon after the programme was aired for the first time the women had to leave the profession. This is not surprising. They were presented as objects ready to be degraded. It is likely that they found clients becoming disrespectful, maybe even aggressive. It is likely that the carefully crafted boundaries they kept in place were eroded and they struggled to maintain the control they needed over appointments with clients.
Strangely, the Billie Piper programme The Secret Diary of a Call Girl which is fiction – though based on the diaries and blogs of an actual call girl – is a lot more realistic and does much to breakdown some of the stereotypes of being a call girl. She is a graduate – highly intelligent – and using her night-time job as a means of funding her ambition and drive to improve her life. She is far from the victim, which Cookie Jane and Emily appeared. She was a woman making a proactive choice to improve her life. It comes to something when fiction is more accurate than supposed “factual” documentaries!
